FAQ

How many lessons will I need?

It is unlikely that one lesson will be sufficient to provide all the skills that you will need to be a safe driver and pass your practical tests. We recommend that you take a series of lessons with an approved driving instructor and combine this with plenty of supervised practice in between lessons. Everyone learns at a different rate, so the key is to ensure that you have learned all the skills that you will need to be a safe driver.

When can I start learning?

You must be 16 or older to take the learner licence theory test. Once you have passed the theory test you will have your learner licence and can commence driving lessons on the road with an approved driving instructor or your supervisor.

You can’t drive on your own until you have your restricted licence. You must be 16 ½ or older and have held a learner licence for at least 6 months before you can take the restricted licence practical test. You cannot drive on your own between 10pm and 5am with a restricted licence and there are strict rules around who you can carry as a passenger.

You must be 18 or older before you can apply for your full licence. If you have successfully completed an approved advanced driving skill course, this is reduced to 17 ½ years of age. If you are under 25 years of age you must have held your restricted licence for at least 18 months or 12 months if you have successfully completed an approved advanced driving skills course. If you are over 25 years of age then it’s 6 months or 3 months respectively.

Can I use my own car?

Yes, you can.  The car must be roadworthy and have a current warrant of fitness and registration.  If you are on a learner licence the car must display ‘L’ plates front and back.  While the instructor will take all necessary professional care, responsibility for any damage sustained to/by the vehicle or any third party remains with you.

Can I use your car for my test?

Yes, this can be arranged depending on prior bookings. There is a charge for this service and we generally allow for two hours which can include a pre-test warmup drive.
